Former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. will be making a rare transition in 2016, when he returns to the playing field as the Red Sox's new first-base coach.

A baseball source confirmed the pending hiring, which was first reported Saturday by the Boston Globe.

The Phillies have hired Angels assistant general manager Matt Klentak as their new general manager, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com Saturday.

Klentak, 36, replaces Ruben Amaro Jr., who was fired in September with the Phillies on the way to a major league-worst 63-99 record and a second straight last-place finish in the National League East.
